Harvest

Our home garden gave us enough lettuce, strawberries and carrots to eat fresh for a while. But sadly many plants - like our tomatoes and all varieties of squash - were too damaged by the hail storm a couple months ago to produce anything.

That above picture was taken the morning after the storm. Below was taken during the storm, albeit the tail end. The footprints are from running outside to rescue our swimsuits which had ironically been laid out to dry. Each hail ball was between 1/2 to a full inch in diameter!

Nevertheless, we don't live in a place called Fruitland for nothing, and a surprisingly small area of town was hit as hard as we were by the storm. We bought peaches and were able to pick plums, corn, green beans, and pears from kind friends, all in enough quantity to can or freeze for the winter.

Much thanks is owed to Mark's mom for all her long days helping us can, in her kitchen no less! Gathering and preserving the harvest has taken up most of our month, but we will be enjoying the results for many months to come.
